The Weeknd GQ Cover analysis

The Weeknd is wearing a casual suit in this image, with no tie or shirt which furthers his happy, laid back, welcoming appearance. This could subvert expectations of male representation in magazines as they are usually depicted as intimidating. However, the patch on his jacket symbolises a sergeant army rank and could suggest a position of power and a regressive representation of a man, following Angela McRobbie’s theory of stereotypes and confirmed gender roles, where men are depicted as strong leaders.
His head is in front of the GQ logo which may imply that he is the main focal point of the cover and the most important topic of this issue of the magazine.
The direct gaze and hand gestures suggest an engagement with the audience and may promote him as more relatable and friendly.
Warm, bright, contrasting colours have been used for the text and the background which could be an intertexual reference to The Weeknd’s 2016 album ‘Starboy’, as they have very similar colour palettes of red, yellow and black.
The main topic of this issue of the magazine is ‘celebration of music and fashion” which is relevant to him as he is a well known artist and additionally known for his often outgoing hair and style choices.
